Lethbridge’s yard waste sites to close for season November 15

Nov 1, 2021 | 9:14 AM

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Lethbridge’s three yard waste sites will officially close for the season on Monday, November 15. This means the final day to deliver to the sites will be Sunday, November 14.

To date this year, the City of Lethbridge says the sites have collected a total of 1.95 kilograms (1,957.37 tonnes) of yard waste, which was diverted from the landfill.

The figure is a new record of total tonnes received in one year at the sites, with the city being hopeful that before closing, the collection surpasses 2,000 tonnes.

PUMPKIN COMPOSTING

Halloween has come and gone, which means clean pumpkins (those without paint) can be taken to yard waste sites for composting.

Pumpkins will be accepted in paper yard waste bags under 25 pounds or on their own.

Grass, leaves and garden waste collected at yard waste sites is composted at the city’s Waste and Recycling Centre, and used in city parks and for ground remediation at the landfill.

Since the spring, the yard waste sites have been open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the following locations:

  • Bridge Drive West Recycling Station – at the top of Bridge Dr. W. hill, right before the junction of Bridge Dr. W. and University Dr.
  • Stafford Drive North Recycling Station – at the junction of Stafford Dr. N. and Scenic Dr. N.
  • South Side Recycling Station – located on 28 Ave. S. between the Lethbridge Soccer Complex and Lethbridge Judo Club

After the sites close, residents can take this material to the Waste and Recycling Centre (landfill) for composting, with no disposal fees charged on Saturdays. The city’s recycling stations, which collect cardboard, glass, tin cans and plastic, remain open the entire year.

As well, Lethbridge’s fall leaf collection program will continue to accept requests until November 12.
