One person charged in North Lethbridge shooting

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Lethbridge Police have put a person behind bars who was allegedly involved in a shooting earlier this week.

LPS reported that, just after 10:30 pm on Wednesday, December 29, a 49-year-old man was shot and suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Taking place on the 800 block of 7 A Ave North, it reportedly started when a verbal altercation turned into a physical one. The suspects and the victim are said to have known each other.

The two suspects were taken into custody the following day around noon after a vehicle was stopped on the 3200 block of 1 A Ave South.

One of the individuals was released from custody without any charges.

Bira Jamal Ahmed, 24, has been charged with aggravated assault, assault with a weapon, discharge of a firearm with intent to endanger life, possession of a weapon dangerous to the public, using a firearm in the commission of an offence, unauthorized possession of a firearm, possession of a loaded/restricted firearm, possession of a firearm obtained by the commission of an offence, and failure to comply with a release order.

The Lethbridge man has been remanded until his next scheduled court appearance on January 7, 2022.

LPS and Lethbridge and Area Search and Rescue are still looking for an unaccounted firearm in connection with the incident. If you find it, police say to not touch it and to immediately report it to LPS at 403-328-4444.
