LETHBRIDGE, AB – Wednesday, April 6 marks Library Giving Day.

The international fundraiser was started in 2019 by the Seattle Public Library. It’s an event in which people can donate to help support their local library.

The Lethbridge Public Library (LPL) says that it “reminds us that libraries, small and large, serve as a cornerstone for our communities.”

Manager of Community & Economic Advancement with the LPL, Elisabeth Hegerat said that “Library Giving Day is a one-day event shared by libraries across North America, and is an opportunity to join together with others in our community on a single day to support your Lethbridge Public Library.”

“Your donations help us add to the services and resources we offer our community, and your support keeps us going year-round.”

Residents can donate on April 6 by clicking the Library Giving Day link at the LPL’s website. Donations are accepted year-round as well. Officials say people can also support the local library by visiting Cupper’s Coffee & Tea and purchasing a bag of the Reader’s Roast coffee.

In 2021, 17,918 people held a card at the Lethbridge Public Library and had access to more than 800,000 physical items through the regional catalogue, including books, magazines, newspapers, music, videos, software and games, and audiobooks.

The LPL noted that last year, 918,705 items were borrowed, including 133,915 digital items.

28,722 curbside pick up visits filled 175,188 holds and 1,230 Surprise Me grab bags.

Between the Main Branch in downtown Lethbridge and the Crossings Branch on the west side of the city, as well as the Bookmobile, there were roughly 161,080 visits to the library in 2021. There were also 263,126 visits to the LPL’s website.
