Traffic enforcement initiative launched by Lethbridge Police

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The Lethbridge Police Service (LPS) begins a traffic enforcement initiative this weekend in an effort to provide safer roads for all users, offer residents more peace and quiet and alleviate demands on Patrol members.

The LPS says that each spring, officers have seen an increase in complaints related to speeding, racing, stunting and loud vehicles. The LPS notes that many of the complaints have been reported on weekends during the evening hours. Problem areas have been listed as Mayor Magrath Drive South, the north Lethbridge industrial park and the West Crossings area.

The enforcement initiative will see members of the LPS Traffic Response Unit (TRU) bolstered by extra resources on random weekends over the next several months. The LPS says the goal is to provide a highly visible police presence in those and other trouble areas across Lethbridge, as well as crack down on illegal driving behaviours and equipment violations.

Sgt. Danny Lomness is with TRU and says police are aware of the strong car culture in the community and the desire of many drivers to display their vehicles. He added that can be done, however, it can be done while still following the rules of the road.

A similar plan that was implemented last year resulted in a decrease in public complaints and tickets issues as enforcement efforts continued. In total, more than 100 tickets were issued over three weekends for different violations under the Traffic Safety Act.

Additionally, there were two Immediate Roadside Sanction suspensions for drinking and driving, three towed vehicles for no insurance or registration, six vehicles seized for equipment violations and tickets issued for various other infractions.

The LPS notes that penalties can range from an automatic court appearance to a specified penalty. Fines range from $162 for excessive noise from exhaust mufflers, to $567 for stunting or racing.

Residents with concerns about traffic issues in specific areas of the city are asked to report them at (403) 328-4444.
