City says ammunition must be disposed of properly

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The City of Lethbridge is reminding residents that they must ensure that any types of ammunition or firearms are disposed of carefully and appropriately.

Firearms and ammo, including bullets, shells, and flares, are not accepted in any waste collection cart or at the Waste & Recycling Centre.

A spokesperson with the City of Lethbridge told LNN that waste management staff are finding these types of items at the Material Recovery Facility more frequently as of late.

“Do not put ammunition (used or unused) or firearms in any waste container. These items are extremely dangerous if not properly managed,” reads a public service announcement from the City of Lethbridge.

City officials say the primary danger associated with ammunition is accidental discharge, which can result from pounding on a bullet or exposing it to high temperatures.

Accidental discharge can also occur during processing operations at the city’s Material Recovery Facility. When ammunition is identified during processing, the facility has to be temporarily shut down.

Anyone looking to dispose of these types of items are instead asked to phone the Lethbridge Police Service (LPS) at 403-327-2210 to receive safe disposal instructions.

For other City of Lethbridge public inquiries, phone 311.
