LETHBRIDGE, AB – A Lethbridge resident has been honoured for her work in preserving and promoting the city’s history.

The 2022 Heritage Awards were given out on Monday, October 3, 2022, at a ceremony in Edmonton.

Although she was unable to attend, Belinda Crowson says it is “absolutely an honour” to be part of the group being recognized.

She received an award for Outstanding Achievement.

“You have to have had at least 10 years [of heritage work], so it means it’s for us older folks,” Crowson joked. “It’s reflecting your entire career, so the work you’ve done both outside of work, so volunteer work as well, in the heritage field.”

Crowson is a Lethbridge City Councillor and the President of the Lethbridge Historical Society.

She says she has always been fascinated by the history of Lethbridge and believes it is important to share the stories of the past.

“I think it’s about understanding the identity of a community, it’s about knowing the roots and where the community came from and how people fit into that. By actually saving our heritage, we actually build stronger communities and have a sense of identity, a sense of place, and a sense of purpose,” says Crowson.”

Crowson has written several books on the topic of Lethbridge’s history, most recently being a co-author of, “Lethbridge: A History in Pictures” in 2021. It includes 130 photographs and documents about 50 events in the city.

The Heritage Awards are done every two years and honours the contributions of those who are actively engaged in heritage preservation and appreciation.

Minister of Culture Ron Orr says this year’s honourees include a remarkable group of individuals, municipalities, and organizations.

“The history of Alberta is both fascinating and inspiring. I’m proud to honour the people and organizations who work so passionately and diligently to preserve our heritage for future generations,” says Orr. “Their dedication will help ensure that our stories continue to be told and remembered for years to come.”
