LETHBRIDGE, AB – The head coach of the Lethbridge Hurricanes is headed to the West Coast.

Brent Kisio has been named an assistant coach for Team Canada at the 2023 IIHF World Junior Championship.

The tournament takes place from December 26, 2022 to January 5, 2023 in Halifax, Nova Scotia and Moncton, New Brunswick.

This will be the second time Kisio will serve as an assistant for the Canadian team at the tournament. He previously served as an assistant at the 2019 tournament in Vancouver. Kisio has represented Canada in coaching multiple times at the Under-17, Under-18, and Under-20 levels. He won a gold medal at the 2018 Hlinka Gretzky Cup as the Canadian head coach.

The 39-year-old from Calgary is in his eighth season as the Hurricanes’ head coach. He has the most wins of any coach in team history, with a record of 244-162-39. Kisio has led the Lethbridge team to two conference championships while qualifying for the Western Hockey League (WHL) playoffs in all seven seasons that have included a post-season. He was named a finalist for the 2014-2015 WHL Coach of the Year award and is the longest active serving coach in the league.

Kisio will serve on the Team Canada staff with fellow WHL coaches Dennis Williams of the Everette Silvertips, who will serve as head coach, and Kelly Guard of the Prince Albert Raiders, who will serve as goaltending consultant for the team.
