LETHBRIDGE, AB – The Alberta Motor Association (AMA) is helping people in need this weekend.

On Saturday, November 19, 2022, the AMA will host its third annual #StackToSackHunger Day.

Drive-through food drop-offs are planned across the province, including one in Lethbridge from 9:00 a.m. until noon at the AMA office at 120 Scenic Drive South. Residents are encouraged to drop off non-perishable food items. Saturday’s event in Lethbridge will help collect items for the Lethbridge Food Bank and Interfaith Food Bank Society.

Those unable to attend on Saturday can donate food items at AMA centres or make a monetary donation online through the Fill Our Fleet campaign. Since the campaign started in 2012, food bank usage in Alberta has gone up by 191%.

The association has a province-wide holiday goal of raising $53,000 in monetary gifts and 23,300 pounds of non-perishables this year, pushing the campaign’s historical totals to $1 million in cash donations and 300,000 pounds of food.

Officials with AMA said Alberta has the highest food insecurity in the country, with 155,722 people in the province using food banks every month.

Jane Flower, Vice-President of Corporate Purpose for the AMA said, “The soaring cost of living means that local families who were teetering on the brink are now being forced right off it.”

Flower said, “The need for help has never been more dire, so the need to give has never been more urgent.”

She added, “We appreciate that this isn’t an easy financial time for anyone right now, but if you can give, even a little, it can make a world of difference for the province’s most vulnerable individuals – people who could be your friends, neighbours or co-workers.”
