LETHBRIDGE, AB – There will soon be a new way for tourists to see what the Lethbridge region has to offer.

The Lethbridge Lodging Association (LLA) has received a $207,350 grant from the federal PrairiesCan Tourism Relief Fund.

LLA says in a media release that they plan to use the money to develop an augmented reality (AR) map of Lethbridge and the surrounding region, designed around the functionality of Google Maps.

Users will be able to see a highly-detailed render of the area with predetermined “attraction hotspots.”

Selecting a hotspot will activate a 3D model that replicates its likeness. Touching it again will open a link to the main site that provides details and a 360-degree video experience.

According to LLA, there will be built-in incentives and rewards for users who do this, such as special admission coupons or discounts on merchandise.

LLA President Sacha Johnson says she believes in the strength of local attractions and experiences to make an initiative like this work.

“This innovative approach will harness all of our collective tourism power by engaging all tourism stakeholders, extending the ability of all to market Lethbridge and region by creating tourism ambassadors, and positioning the region as innovative as user experience is enhanced in a way that is game changing,” says Johnson.

LLA says the AR map will highlight galleries, museums, and interpretive centres; natural attractions; entertainment and arts venues; recreational attractions; accommodations; meetings and event venues; and more.

Participating organizations will have access and training in using these assets.

Minister for PrairiesCan Dan Vandal says the Lethbridge area has many unique and exciting experiences for people from across the country and the world to enjoy.

“The region is well-positioned to take advantage of a rebound in travel and tourism. Our government’s support for the Lethbridge Lodging Association will help create new opportunities for local tourism operators to digitally showcase what they have to offer; attracting new visitors and growing the local economy,” says Vandal.

LLA says it has also invested its own funds into the developing the AR map and has consulted local stakeholders.
