LETHBRIDGE, AB – The City of Lethbridge announced on Wednesday, December 14, 2022, that the outdoor skating rink at Festival Square has opened to the public.

The rink will be open from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. every day and community members are encouraged to come out, strap on their skates and hit the ice this winter just in time for the holidays.

A list of rules will be posted on either end of the rink that includes no ice hockey, no strollers, no food, no toys, and no pets among other things.

Helmets and protective gear are strongly recommended, and guests are asked to abide by the rules and keep the area safe for everyone.

While a synthetic surface was used on the rink in 2019, this year, city officials explained they’ve brought in the real deal and regular maintenance will be done every day to keep the ice clean and re-surfaced.

Sarah Amies, Executive Director of Downtown Lethbridge BRZ explained that the new ice rink was previously purchased from students at the University of Lethbridge.

“The cost was taken care of last year through a grant that a group of university students had applied for, and I believe the actual rink itself cost about $12,000; so this year, aside from the actual building and preparation, the cost has been very negligible.”

Those looking for a family outing, date night or even a quick lap or two around the rink can check it out on 6 St. South, just off 3rd Avenue South.

Amies went on to say, “During the evening, which starts pretty early these days, we get our beautiful lights on the Christmas tree is illuminated and so it’s a very pretty and festive environment to skate.”

The City is also in the works of talking with the Lethbridge Hurricanes to bring them onto the ice in the new year.
