Lethbridge Christmas Tree Collection taking place in January 2023

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The annual Christmas Tree Collection program has been running in Lethbridge for the past 29 years.

Since its inception, over 1.5 million kilograms, or approximately 90,000 Christmas trees have been diverted from the landfill.

Each year, the City of Lethbridge Waste and Recycling Service in partnership with local youth agencies collect trees across the city to yield new purpose.

Christmas trees picked up at each household are chipped into mulch to be used in city parks.

This year, the one-day Christmas Tree Collection blitz will take place on January 14, 2023.

Community members with a real tree are asked to leave it in their regular garbage collection location (front or alley) but away from their waste collection cart by 7:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 14.

The City of Lethbridge reminds the public that all decorations, tinsel and lights must be removed from the tree prior to pick up, otherwise it may not be taken.

While most of the tree collection will take place on January 14, trees may be collected over the course of a few days if they are missed.

Youth groups participating in the Christmas Tree Recycling program this year will also receive a $10,000 payment from the City of Lethbridge for their help with the city-wide collection.

In past years, the entire city has been done with over 70 people including youth and adults to help in the collection process.
