Elkwater’s winter festival tradition returns this weekend

ELKWATER, AB – Bring your mitts, toques and hot dog roasting sticks.

Elkwater’s winter festival tradition returns to the community this weekend.

The Elkwater Community Association has a number of activities planned for the family. Some of the many activities include snowshoeing, sledding, snow graffiti, a snowman-building contest and cookie decorating.

But volunteer organizer, Valerie Pearson, says the highlight of the event will be the sleigh rides. Someone from the Maple Creek area will be bringing in a horse-drawn wagon for the community, from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m., at the main grounds.

“There are so many activities that are just going to be fun for the family,” said Valerie Pearson, volunteer organizer.

The activities are intended to help people lose themselves in nature and go phone-free for a day.

Several vendors will also be running booths and selling homemade items and merchandise at the community hall.

Pearson says the event was long overdue. “We’ve missed spending time as a community for so many years now, so it’s just to create memories,” she said.

“We just encourage the community to come out, enjoy the weather and spend time with family,” said Pearson.

The free event takes place this Saturday, Feb. 4, at the Elkwater Community Hall, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
