LETHBRIDGE, AB – The Lethbridge Police Service (LPS) has laid charges against four youths following an aggravated assault in the city.

At approximately 10:35 a.m. on Friday, February 17, 2023, the LPS says a 15-year-old boy was in the parking lot of a fast food restaurant in the 1900 block of 3 Avenue South when he was approached by four teens.

According to police, the victim was struck multiple times with a tire jack and repeatedly kicked after he fell to the ground. LPS officials say the victim’s shoes were stolen, and the suspects reportedly fled the scene on foot.

Staff at the restaurant assisted the victim until EMS arrived. Police say he was taken to hospital with extensive head injuries.

The LPS said in a media release, “The parties involved are known to one another. This was not a random incident.”

Two 15-year-old boys, a 14-year-old boy, and a 16-year-old boy, all from Lethbridge, are charged. They each face one count of aggravated assault, wearing a disguise with intent to commit a criminal offence, possession of an offensive weapon dangerous to the public, and robbery.

The suspects have all been released from custody. The 16-year-old and one of the 15-year-old suspects are scheduled to appear in court on March 8, 2023. The other 15-year-old and the 14-year-old have court dates set for March 22, 2023.

Since all of the suspects are under the age of 18, their names cannot be released due to provisions under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
