City of Lethbridge urges people not to dispose of needles in blue bins

Mar 2, 2023 | 5:10 PM

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The Waste and Recycling Centre staff have found an increase of needles in blue recycling carts in Lethbridge.

City officials say hazardous materials such as needles can pose a risk to waste collection operators.

They say needles should not be disposed of in blue carts. Instead, needles should be disposed of properly by being placed in a labelled ‘sharps’ container, and the container should then be taken to a pharmacy participating in the ENVIRx Program. City officials say there are also 20 needle disposal boxes around the city, which are painted yellow.

If you find a needle in a public space, you can contact the needle pickup hotline at 403-332-0722.

If you are unsure about how to dispose of a needle, you can contact 311 or visit the City of Lethbridge Waste Wizard website at lethbridge.ca/waste-wizard.
