LETHBRIDGE, AB – A man is facing multiple charges after an incident in Lethbridge on May 30, 2023.

At approximately 1:50 p.m., the Lethbridge Police Service (LPS) responded to a report that a male was threatening a female inside a home along the 600 block of Stafford Drive North. The LPS noted that the woman was able to safely leave the residence once officers arrived on scene.

Police reported that when officers confronted the man, he brandished two hatchets and began to approach them while refusing to drop the hatchets or leave the house.

The Critical Incident Team was deployed to the scene, and tried to contact the man, who they said began damaging the property and throwing objects out of a window. Soon after, responders noticed smoke and flames inside the home, and fire crews were able to extinguish the blaze before it spread to neighbouring houses. Official said the home sustained significant damage as a result of the fire and is currently uninhabitable, though no injuries were reported.

Police said while firefighters were working to put out the fire, the man exited the home and was subsequently apprehended by a police service dog. He was treated for non-life threatening injuries.

A further investigation revealed the suspect was not a resident of the home, but police said he had been permitted to stay at the residence.

Joe Zwart, 38, of Cowley, is facing multiple charges including:

  • Arson
  • Possession of a weapon dangerous to the public
  • Two counts of mischief
  • Two counts of assaulting a peace officer
  • Two counts of failing to comply with a release order

Zwart is currently in custody awaiting a Judicial Interim Release hearing.
