Tornado confirmed to have touched down near Stettler

STETTLER, AB – Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) has confirmed that a tornado touched down on May 31, 2023, near the central Alberta hamlet of Botha, which is located in the County of Stettler.

The tornado was observed at about 4:37 p.m. just north of Botha, about 94 km east of Red Deer.

Multiple reports on social media showcased photos and videos of the event.

There have been no reports of damage or injury at this time.

According to ECCC, nickel to golf ball-sized hail was also reported, the largest being sighted near Pigeon Lake. One eyewitness said they saw the tornado from the town of Stettler, about 15 km away, adding that it was on the ground for about 10 minutes.
