University of Lethbridge to celebrate Indigenous Peoples on Tuesday

LETHBRIDGE, AB – National Indigenous Peoples Day is on Wednesday, June 21, 2023.

To mark the occasion, the University of Lethbridge (U of L) is hosting a variety of events on Tuesday, June 20, celebrating the culture and contributions of Indigenous Peoples.

Beginning at 11:00 a.m., there will be a smudge in the Iikaisskini (Low Horn) Gathering Centre.

The smudge will be followed by a round dance and refreshments at the UHall Atrium, hosted by Iikaisskini Indigenous Services.

Starting at 1:00 p.m., attendees can try out some traditional Indigenous games and medicine bag making in the UHall Atrium with Siksiikakoan (Blackfootman) Shane McDougall and the Agility team.

A teepee raising will take place at 2:00 p.m. in The Grove. Officials noted the teepee raising will be moved to the UHall Atrium in case of rain.
