LETHBRIDGE, AB – Thursday, July 27, 2023 marks the 70th anniversary of the Korean Armistice Agreement.

The armistice was signed on July 27, 1953 to signify the end of the war that started with the invasion of South Korea by North Korea on June 25, 1950.

In Lethbridge on Thursday, the Royal Canadian Legion General Stewart Branch No. 4 held a ceremony at the cenotaph in downtown. The ceremony included the laying of two wreaths in front of the monument.

The Korean War is often regarded as the forgotten war, due to it starting not long after the conclusion of the Second World War on September 2, 1945.

Korean War veteran Warrant Officer Herbert L. Johnson, who lives in Lethbridge, said, “This is significant. The country should know it, the world should know it for that matter, and I am proud to have been able to serve my country in Korea at that time.”

Johnson served in the Korean War from 1951 to 1952, enlisting when he was 18 years old.

Over 26,000 Canadians served in the Korean War, and 516 Canadians died.
