LETHBRIDGE, AB – The federal government has announced a new green partnership in southern Alberta.

Through a joint initiative between Ottawa and the City of Lethbridge, $134,813 will be spent on planning work for the eventual transition of the city’s transit to zero emission busses. The federal investment totals $107,850.

Minister of Tourism Randy Boissonnault said that working towards electrifying transit in municipalities will help the federal government to achieve its goal of net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.

“This planning study in Lethbridge is the next step towards a full zero emission city transit fleet that will improve local transit services while reducing pollution and greenhouse gas emissions,” said Boissonnault. “Our government will continue to work with municipalities and provinces to invest in sustainable transit options and improve the quality of life of all Canadians.”

The governments will work together to create an Implementation Roadmap, which will aim to help the community to reduce greenhouse gas emissions while improving the effectiveness of local transit services.

The study will assess the benefits, risks and constraints associated with zero emission transit.

Mayor Blaine Hyggen said he and the rest of Lethbridge City Council are pleased that their initiative is being supported by Infrastructure Canada.

“Our Transit fleet will be a significant component as we collectively strive towards a greener future with sustainable energy use,” said Hyggen. “With this grant funding, we will be able to create an Implementation Roadmap outlining a full transition of having zero emission buses which will be a huge step forward for Lethbridge.”

Between 2021 and 2027, the federal government said it will be investing as much as $3 billion per year in long-term funding for public transit.
