Interfaith Food Bank seeking more volunteers

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The Interfaith Food Bank has issued a call for more volunteers.

Officials said due to the increased cost of groceries and other products, more and more Canadians are relying on food banks. Interfaith is hoping that people add volunteering to their to-do list this fall.

Executive director Danielle McIntyre said, “In addition to increases in demand, we are also experiencing the generosity of the community with a bountiful harvest this year.”

“We need help with just about everything from sorting produce, working in the kitchens, stocking shelves, and assisting the families we’re here to serve. There is likely a match for everyone that’s interested in helping out.”

Interfaith is recruiting helpers in multiple departments. Individuals of all ages and abilities are welcome to apply to volunteer. Interfaith did note, however, that walk-in opportunities are not available.

Applications to volunteer are accepted year-round, and the opportunities are matched with the interests, abilities and availability of people who apply. Current openings include:

  • Client Services: volunteers help with the reception of clients, process client orders, lift and carry food hampers, enter data and connect clients with community resources.
  • Operations: volunteers help with sorting and repackaging food and other items, build food hampers, stock shelves, fill food orders, clean floors and tables, as well as complete other general warehouse tasks.
  • Community Engagement: volunteers engage community members in program activities that include cooking, gardening and sharing their crafts and talents with others.
  • Administration and Governance: Helpers support the administrative team by accepting donations, making copies, stuffing envelopes, answering phones, entering data and assisting with fundraising initiatives, events, and The Second Door Thrift Store.

While the food bank is recruiting individuals interested in long-term involvement, casual and short-term options are available, as are group and corporate volunteer opportunities. Positions are also available for community service hours. Volunteer roles involve some orientation and training, and helpers should be ready to commit to three-to-four-hour shifts, weekday mornings or afternoons.

Those interested in volunteering or learning more can contact Volunteer Coordinator Bill Selles at 403-320-8779 or volunteer@interfaithfoodbank.ca. More details about the food bank are at its website.
