LETHBRIDGE, AB – Pedals will be spinning at Henderson Lake Park on Saturday, September 23, 2023.

Streets Alive Mission is set to host its first Ride for Refuge event in Lethbridge. The initiative aims to help raise funds and awareness for local charities.

Chief Development Officer, Jennifer Lepko, explained that participants will hop on their bikes and take a few laps around Henderson Lake Park. She noted that Lethbridge is one of more than 30 total communities across Canada hosting a Ride for Refuge.

Lepko said, “It kind of aligns with our Coldest Night of the Year walk. It’s the same kind of concept, but it’s about getting and peddling out there, and doing a bike ride because we don’t necessarily have as many [fundraising] bike rides as some [other] places do.”

For the Ride for Refuge, participants can either bike a 10-kilometre route (two loops around Henderson Lake Park) or a 20-kilometre path (four loops around).

People can also walk around the park if they choose to not bike.

Lepko stated, “It’s about, really, making things better for people across the country. Any of the funds raised will go towards our Life Recovery Program.”

Streets Alive Mission offers two Life Recovery Programs, which empower men and women to escape addiction and abuse.

FUNDRAISING

Lepko said the fundraising goal for the Lethbridge Ride for Refuge has been set at $25,000.

As of Wednesday, September 20, the initiative has raised over $5,000.

Registration can be done online at the event website, where people can also make donations.

Lepko added that individuals who cannot attend the ride on Saturday can still register and donate for about a month after the event.

She said, “If you’re unable to make this date, we have no problem with you doing the ride on your own. So, for about 30 days past Saturday [September 23], people can still register and do their ride or collect money on their end, and we will absolutely accept it.”

On Saturday, check-in at Henderson Lake Park will open at 3 p.m., with individuals who have raised $150 or more receiving a t-shirt, while supplies last. Lepko said bike inspections will also be offered on-site.

At 4 p.m., participants will be sent off on their ride path. Once participants are done riding or walking, they will be treated to a light meal.
