LETHBRIDGE, AB – Five Lethbridge police officers have been honoured by the Cpl. Cummings’ Watch.

The Cpl. Cummings’ Watch is a program made up of Alberta RCMP, Mothers Against Drunk Driving Canada (MADD) and Alberta transportation, which supports police efforts in the detection and apprehension of impaired drivers on Alberta roads.

The program is named in honour of Cpl. Graeme Cumming, an RCMP member who was killed on duty by an impaired driver while conducting a traffic stop on Highway 3 on August 12, 1998.

The following Lethbridge Police Officers were honoured:

  • Cst. Mike Dowsley – 32 impaired drivers charged (Gold Challenge coin)
  • Cst. Jack Krystofiak – 17 impaired drivers charged (Silver Challenge Coin)
  • Cst. Shaun McCarthy – 23 impaired drivers charged (Silver Challenge Coin)
  • Cst. Brent Paxman – 35 impaired drivers charged (Gold Challenge Coin)
  • Cst. Jason Roth – 19 impaired drivers charged (Silver Challenge Coin)

Anita Huchala, President and victim support volunteer of MADD Canada said, “It is alarming, the numbers that they are catching, but it’s also comforting, because those are people that they are taking off the road before they cause a crash that could kill or injure somebody.”

Constable Brent Paxman said, “We’re a very close knit team, we work well together, there’s two different teams that we work kind of opposite, we overlap a bit. All-in-all we’re all very close and we push each other.”
