LETHBRIDGE, AB – The Lethbridge & District YWCA is holding Week Without Violence 2023 this week.

Week Without Violence is part of a global movement with YWCAs across the country and around the world, aimed at ending violence against women and girls.

YWCA Lethbridge & District’s theme for Week Without Violence for 2023 is Transit and Public Transportation Safety – Safety in our Communities and On Our Streets.

Lethbridge Transit has increased security at the Lethbridge Park ‘n’ Ride terminal, added additional security cameras, removed walls in the building, and installed outside light for better visibility.

Cat Champagne, Director of External Relations with the YWCA Lethbridge & District said, “A lot of our women and children do rely on public transportation to get around, so having safety measures in place for them is important. Things like being able to jump on a bus if you’re trying to flee a situation locally and knowing that you’ll be transported safely.”

The week will hold multiple events to raise awareness and educate the public.

Tuesday, October 17 saw a downtown street at event take place, and Bootsma Bakery is selling cookies to raise funds for the YWCA until October 21.

On Thursday, from 1:00 p.m. until 2:30, the YWCA is hosting a seminar called A Long Road: The links between gender justice, and safe, affordable transportation, which will feature four speakers.

On Friday, Take Back the Night 2023 is happening at Lethbridge City Hall. The event will start with a presentation, followed by a walk from City Hall to the YWCA.

The YWCA will conclude the week of activities with a Week Without Violence Yoga Fundraiser at their building. The yoga begins at noon on Saturday, and a donation is required.

More information on the week and the events can be found at the organization’s website.
