LETHBRIDGE, AB – The application window for an annual scholarship in southern Alberta is closing soon.

The Rotary Club of Lethbridge East is celebrating the sixth year of its Agricultural Scholarship program.

Wayne Lindwall is the chair of the selection committee. He said the hope is to award three $10,000 bursaries to post-secondary undergraduate agriculture students from southern Alberta.

Lindwall stated, “We all know, at least in southern Alberta, how important the ag industry.”

“Everyone knows education is expensive and good education is very expensive, so $10,000 goes a long way to helping these students meet their career goals in pursuing a rewarding career in agriculture.”

In the last five years, 11 scholars have been celebrated as recipients of the scholarship.

Lindwall said at this point, the Rotary Club has seen fewer applicants than in the past, but he is hopeful that more applications will come in before the January 31, 2024 submission deadline.

Interested students must have successfully completed at least the equivalent of two full years (60 credit hours) of training at a recognized post-secondary institution in agriculture or in a related field with substantive and documented agricultural content.

Additionally, applicants must either be a legal resident of southern Alberta or have lived in the region for seven of the past 10 years. The Rotary Club noted that southern Alberta includes the counties of Lethbridge, Taber, Warner, Forty Mile, Cardston, Pincher Creek, Ranchlands, Willow Creek, Cypress, Newell, Vulcan and all municipalities within these counties (Lethbridge, Brooks, Medicine Hat), as well as the municipality of Crowsnest Pass, and the Kainai and Piikani First Nations.

Lindwall said, “This is a great opportunity, because so many of our club members are leaders in the ag community. It’s not just the scholarship, which is important, but you know, we also like to mentor these students over the next few years and give them advice and feedback.”

“Part of the reason why this scholarship has been so successful is that there are really no losers here. Everyone that applies, we try to follow up and give them advice. That’s what many of our winners and all the candidates really enjoy about this particular scholarship because we give them advice on what they might be able to do better, how they can advance their careers.”

Lindwall said the selection committee is not necessarily looking solely for the best academic students, but members are looking for individuals who serve as leaders in their community.

He stated, “It’s not just academics, we’re looking for well-rounded leaders that will be advocates for agriculture and advocates for southern Alberta in general.”

Full eligibility criteria is available at the Rotary Club of Lethbridge East website.

Recipients will be celebrated at an awards banquet on March 7 at the Coast Lethbridge Hotel and Conference Centre.
