Lethbridge to continue micro-mobility following Neuron e-scooter success

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Whether it is with the same company or not, people in Lethbridge will be able to continue using e-scooters and e-bikes.

At its regular meeting on Tuesday, February 13, 2024, council voted unanimously to continue permitting shared micro-mobility services.

Neuron Mobility is nearing the end of its two-year pilot project, which began in April 2022. It has been offering scooters and bikes that people can rent through a mobile app.

During the pilot stage, riders took a total of 269,030 trips, travelling over 740,000 kilometres.

According to Neuron, more than six-out-of-ten e-scooter trips resulted in a purchase being made at a local business, with a total of $3.2 million spent at local businesses in Lethbridge following a trip.

Councillor Mark Campbell said it made sense to continue to support services like Neuron.

“We know these e-scooters and e-bikes have been popular, so bringing them back is a positive move for our residents,” said Campbell. “We are also pleased that some of the original concerns residents and users had with micro mobility have largely been addressed by Administration and the service provider and will continue to be monitored moving forward.”

Neuron was originally selected for the pilot project through a competitive process. City of Lethbridge Transportation Engineer Adam St. Amant said that will happen again and the city will choose a single service provider.

“The competitive process allows the City to set expectations around shared micro-mobility services and allows potential service providers to propose programs that meet or exceed City expectations. Once awarded the permit, micro-mobility service providers can focus on delivering quality service without the need to compete directly for riders,” said St. Amant.

The City of Lethbridge did not state when it hopes to have a micro-mobility service provider selected.
