Alberta has youngest population in Canada

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The younger generations continue to make up larger portions of the population.

Statistics Canada has reported that, for the first time on a national basis as of July 2023, Millennials have overtaken Baby Boomers for being the largest generation.

Baby Boomers, who were born between 1946-1965, had been the country’s most dominant generation since the mid-1960’s.

That changed last summer, however, as Millennials, including those born between 1981-1996, made up the largest share of the population.

The average age of the Canadian population was 41.6 years.

Stats Canada reported that Alberta had the youngest average age at 39.1. The Prairie region as a whole was on the younger end as Manitoba (39.3 years) and Saskatchewan (39.7 years) had the second and third youngest populations.

Alberta also had the lowest proportion of people aged 65 and up at just 15.1 per cent.

Despite it just happening nationally for the first time last year, Millennials have been the largest generation in Alberta since 2014.

To get a breakdown specific to Lethbridge, LNN had to look at the 2021 federal census, which also had slightly different age categories.

  • Millennials (Age 25-44): 28%
  • Gen Z (Age 10-24): 20%
  • Baby Boomers (Age 60-79): 19%
  • Gex X (Age 45-59): 17%
  • Gen Alpha (Age 0-9): 11%
  • Age 80+: 5%
