Mar 22, 2024 | 12:25 PM

LETHBRIDGE, AB – For over three decades, municipalities across the globe have recognized March 22 as World Water Day. The initiative focuses on the importance of freshwater.

The City of Lethbridge is recognizing the 2024 edition of the day by updating residents on current water initiatives.

WATER CONSERVATION PLAN

The City reports that it’s in the final stages of preparing the Water Conservation Plan and Strategy (WCPAS), which includes an update to the Water Rationing Action Plan.

The WCPAS goal is to inform on both short, and long-term planning, including strategies to combat water scarcity. It will be presented to the Economic and Finance Standing Policy Committee on April 11, 2024.

The WCPAS will reportedly also demonstrate water availability in the region. According to the province, reservoir levels in Southern Alberta are well below normal.

CONSERVATION EDUCATION

The City is starting a new initiative called ‘Water Wednesdays’, which is a weekly series to provide information, tips and expert analysis on ‘all things water’ in southern Alberta.

An example video has been released explaining how a leaky toilet can be a significant water-waster.

DIGITAL WATER LICENCES

Lethbridge’s water licence has moved to the provincial Digital Regulatory Assurance System (DRAS), which is designed to streamline drought response.

It will reportedly help the province understand how much water is available during a drought.

Additionally, the online tool will allow managers and users to make important decisions for managing drought conditions.
