Lethbridge College advisor receives Ducks Unlimited Canada volunteer award

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Kerry Edwards did not get involved with Ducks Unlimited (DU) Canada for the accolades, but he is receiving recognition for his work.

Edwards is the faculty advisor of the DU student chapter at Lethbridge College.

The nonprofit aims to conserve, create, restore and manage wetlands across Canada, as well as associated uplands in order to provide healthy ecosystems for animals and people.

Edwards, who has been involved with the group for over three decades, has been named by DU as its Alberta Volunteer of the Year.

“It’s a very humbling honour and again, one that I have to give a lot of credit to the students at Lethbridge College that are a part of that chapter,” he says.

The Lethbridge College DU chapter was the first established at a post-secondary in Canada and Edwards was involved from the very beginning, pitching the idea for a chapter at the college in 2005.

Since its formation, more than 600 students have participated in the cause, and a scholarship is available for club members. Back in March, the group celebrated its 20^th fundraising banquet.

Edwards says DU volunteers help with restoration projects, and initiatives aimed at securing habitat for wildlife, among other causes.

IMPACT OF VOLUNTEERING

Edwards understands it may be difficult to put in volunteer hours in between a busy work schedule, but he notes that helping can make a difference.

“It’s not a matter of how much time you put in, it’s just the fact that giving your time, whatever you have, a little or a lot, is always appreciated,” he remarks.
