LETHBRIDGE, AB – A local charity has opened up a new green space.

On Thursday, May 30, 2024, the Martha Retreat Centre held the grand opening of their new Contemplative Food Garden outside of their building.

The garden has been under construction over the past year, and it was officially opened with a blessing and an event, which included Lethbridge mayor Blaine Hyggen planting tomatoes.

Diana Sim, Executive Director of the centre says that there has been a lot of support from over 150 volunteers and many donators to help get the garden up and running.

The newly formed Volunteer Garden Team will oversee the care of the garden, which includes plants including tomatoes, spinach, lettuce and kale, among others.

Alongside the food beds in the garden, the organization will also have a teaching garden, including a program aimed at teaching new Canadians how to garden in Canada.

Sim added that some vegetables grown will be sold to interested parties, and the organization will give some out to local food banks.

Links to volunteer and donate to the Martha Retreat Centre can be found on the organization’s website.
