Normal summer weather forecast in southern Alberta

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Environment Canada says we should not expect a season of weather that is too far out of the norm.

Meteorologist Brian Proctor says the spring in southern Alberta was a bit more unpredictable with higher-than-expected precipitation and varying daily high temperatures.

“In general terms, probably a bit of a continuation of the somewhat unsettled conditions we’ve seen through much of the province for the remainder of June, and then warming up as we move into July and August into, sort of, seasonal to above-seasonal temperatures,” says Proctor.

He predicts the region will get “spotty” precipitation throughout the coming months.

Proctor notes that the Lethbridge area and everywhere south of it had a pretty wet spring, which has somewhat helped to alleviate concerns about droughts.

“Much of extreme southern Alberta is actually just into sort of fairly normal conditions [for precipitation] at this point in time,” explains Proctor. “As you get a bit north of Lethbridge, moving up more towards the Brooks area and up to Calgary and north of that, we start seeing more abnormally dry to moderate drought conditions.”

With a decently warm summer and spotty precipitation, the meteorologist says it is possible that there could be a higher risk of grass fires in southern Alberta.
