LETHBRIDGE, AB – The City of Lethbridge is celebrating National Indigenous Peoples Day on June 21, 2024.

Starting at 10 a.m., the community is invited to attend the inaugural flag raising of the Métis flag at the newly installed flagpole along Métis Trail at the Blackfoot Boulevard West intersection.

From there, an opening ceremony and free feast will be held at Galt Gardens beginning at noon. Officials and community organizations will be on hand to speak. After the lunch there will be multiple activities at Galt Gardens with local Indigenous artists and a market.

Aside from that, both the Lethbridge Public Library and Fort Whoop-Up have a slate of events happening throughout the day. The Library will hold Indigenous Storytime, rock dot art and making friendship bracelets, while Fort Whoop-Up will have the opening of the BuffaloMech exhibit, and digital art installation from students at the University of Lethbridge.

The Reconciliation Lethbridge Advisory Committee (RLAC) and the City are also seeking local Indigenous artists to submit their Orange Shirt designs in preparation for Reconciliation Week.

Indigenous artists in the Lethbridge and surrounding areas are eligible to submit their designs. The artwork must be an original design and must be suitable for printing on a t-shirt.

The winning entry will be chosen via a nominations committee comprised of RLAC and the City’s Indigenous Relations Office. The winner will receive a $500 honorarium.
