City of Lethbridge commits $1.2 million to Galbraith School modernization

LETHBRIDGE, AB – A major project at a north side elementary school is getting support from Lethbridge City Council.

Members voted unanimously on Tuesday, June 25, 2024 to put $1.2 million towards the soon-to-be modernized Galbraith School.

First built in 1911, it is the oldest school in the city.

The municipal funding will go towards the expansion of the school’s gymnasium and make it “middle-school sized.”

Mayor Blaine Hyggen says the facility will be made available for public use at least two days per week, helping to address the rising demand for gymnasium spaces.

“This coming modernization creates another opportunity to add additional community recreational space,” says Hyggen. “This approval will leverage City capital funding with a Provincially-funded project to meet community needs at a reduction for taxpayers, as well as demonstrate continued commitment to school partnerships.”

Recreation Services Manager Travis Grindle says this will benefit both the school and its students, as well as the wider community.

“The cost savings of a shared capital project, increased access for the community and better learning experiences for city residents are favourable outcomes of partnering with the school divisions on gymnasium upsizings,” says Grindle. “This will increase access to a modernized gymnasium and definitely help offset growing demand for gym space in the city.”

The gym expansion is part of a much larger modernization initiative that will impact many other areas of the school.

The Government of Alberta approved funding in this year’s budget for the design phase of the project. Because of this, the Lethbridge School Division needed a firm commitment from the city before the end of October 2024 on whether it would contribute to the gym’s upsizing so that it could be included into the schematic designs.
