Lethbridge sees sizable improvement to unemployment rate in June

LETHBRIDGE, AB – More people were able to find work over the last month in the Lethbridge area.

That is according to Statistics Canada, which released the results of its Labour Force Survey for June 2024.

In the Lethbridge Census Metropolitan Area (Lethbridge CMA), which also includes some immediately-surrounding areas, the unemployment rate was 5.1 per cent, improving from 5.8 per cent the month prior.

That was due to an increase in employment of 1,400, while the number of people without jobs fell by 500.

The population in the Lethbridge CMA grew by 500 to 116,800.

Provincially, the unemployment rate barely changed, falling from 7.2 per cent in May to 7.1 per cent in June.

Although Alberta experienced a gain of 8,100 jobs, including 5,700 full-time and 2,400 part-time positions, population growth exceeded the rise in new jobs.

An additional 16,200 people started to call Alberta home last month.

The sectors that grew the most in Alberta in June were educational services (+8,400), natural resources (+4,500), and agriculture (+4,400). On the other hand, job losses were experienced in fields such as professional, scientific and technical services (-5,000), information, culture and recreation (-3,300), and transportation and warehousing (-2,900).

Nationally, the unemployment rate rose by 0.2 per cent in June to 6.4 per cent.
