Lethbridge pursuing Memorial Cup bid

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The City of Lethbridge is pursing a bid for the 2026 Memorial Cup.

The City’s economic and finance standing policy committee (SPC) gave approval to the bid at the meeting on Thursday, July 11, 2024.

The SPC accepted a revised motion to support the bid, which will cost the City $1,250,000 if it is successful. The funds for the bid would come out of the City’s Municipal Revenue Stabilization Reserve (MRSR).

Councillor Mark Campbell said Lethbridge is more than capable of hosting, with events like the Brier in the past showing that, “While its not hockey, we do have an ability to host events like this, bringing us to the national front.”

He added, “I have no doubt should Lethbridge be successful getting this bid, we will also have a very successful tournament financially.”

However, the decision did not pass unanimously, as Councillor Belinda Crowson voted against the bid. She said that she would prefer seeing a lot more focus on needs like housing and water.

Another concern brought up is the strain the bid would put on the MRSR if successful. No money will be paid unless Lethbridge s chosen as the host, which will be announced in December.

According to the SPC, the bid is projected to have an economic impact of nearly $10.5 million to the Lethbridge area.

The Memorial Cup has never been hosted in Lethbridge.
