Shannon Phillips talks new position at University of Lethbridge

Aug 21, 2024 | 12:02 PM

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Shannon Phillips, also known as the former Lethbridge-West MLA (Members of the Legislative Assembly) of nearly a decade, revealed her new position on social media on August 20.

She states: “I’m very pleased to announce I’m joining the [University of Lethbridge’s] Department of Political Science as Adjunct Faculty this fall. I’m grateful for the opportunity to give back to the City of Lethbridge and the post-secondary community that makes Southern Alberta a vibrant place to live.”

Besides being an MLA from 2015-2024, Shannon Phillips has contributed to Alberta politics in many other ways. She has been the Minister of Environment and Parks and the Minister Responsible for the Status of Women in the Alberta Cabinet. Phillips also served as Minister Responsible for Climate Change and as the Deputy Government House Leader.

In a statement from the University of Lethbridge, they gave insight on what her role will entail:

“The University is pleased to welcome Shannon Phillips to our community of adjunct professors.

Adjunct appointments allow faculty members from other universities, qualified individuals from organizations or professional bodies or those with cultural expertise to participate in research, teaching or mentorship activities on our campuses. These individuals are uniquely qualified in their professional or cultural fields, and generously lend their time and expertise to contribute to our Faculties and Schools.”

Phillips expressed her excitement for her new role: “It’s my way of giving back to the community, I’ll be working with the folks in the department of political science. Working with any students who want to work on independent studies, providing guest lectures eventually.”

When asked how this opportunity came about, Phillips says: “I was looking for ways that I could give back both to the community that has been so supportive of me, but also in ways that reflect some of my strengths from the past.”

Phillips officially resigned from being an MLA on July 1, 2024, and will begin her new position this upcoming school year.
