U of L receives funding for youth STEM programs

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Young people with an interest in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) will soon have more opportunities at the University of Lethbridge (U of L).

The university’s Destination Exploration (DE) program has received roughly $186,000 from Actua, a leading STEM youth outreach organization.

Actua CEO Jennifer Flanagan says they want to make it easier for youths to enrol in STEM programs.

“Each year, the Actua network engages 375,000 youth in 600 communities across the country. Destination Exploration at ULethbridge is an integral part of this national impact and together, we will continue to relentlessly remove barriers so that all youth can be engaged in STEM,” says Flanagan.

DE Interim Director of Youth Outreach Steph Elder says this year’s funding announcement will allow them to continue to grow and provide more opportunities for youths in southern Alberta.

DE offers interactive classroom workshops, summer camps, after school clubs, science-themed birthday parties, and other special events.

Since its inception in 2002, DE has reached an average of 8,700 youths annually.

You can learn more about DE on the U of L’s website.
