UCP to select candidate for Lethbridge-West by-election Monday

Sep 29, 2024 | 6:00 AM

LETHBRIDGE, AB – We will soon know who will represent the United Conservative Party (UCP) in a key by-election.

Three people are looking to run for the party in Lethbridge-West: city councillor John Middleton-Hope, political manager Erin Leclerc, and realtor Shauna Gruninger.

Current UCP members who have had memberships since at least September 2, 2024 are eligible to vote.

Ballots will be cast at the downtown branch of the Lethbridge Public Library on Monday, September 23, 2024 from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Officials with the party tell LNN that the results should be available shortly after the polls close.

The winner will go on to challenge the Alberta NDP’s candidate Rob Miyashiro to see who will become the riding’s next MLA.

An exact date for the by-election has yet to be called, but the Government of Alberta must call it before January 1, 2025.

The by-election comes after Shannon Phillips resigned as the MLA for Lethbridge-West at the end of June.
