LETHBRIDGE, AB – The UCP has began their doorknocking campaign in Lethbridge ahead of the upcoming Lethbridge-West by-election.

John Middleton-Hope will run against the NDP’s Rob Miyashiro for the office. Middleton-Hope is currently serving his first term on Lethbridge City Council, and is a former chief of the Lethbridge Police Service.

He beat Erin Leclerc and Shauna Gruninger in the nomination race in September.

Middleton-Hope says his long time living in Lethbridge and commitment to the city is what makes him the best candidate for the office.

Middleton-Hope also says that the UCP is focusing heavily on the issues that he hears from the community and its organizations, especially regarding healthcare and education.

He said, “We’ve met with both of the school boards, we know what their issues are. The government has made a number of announcements here in regards to accelerator funding which is going to be very helpful.”

Middleton-Hope continued, “The City needs to be working with the school boards to ensure that we’re well prepared when we have an opportunity to apply for additional grants for our students, our teachers, our educational assistants and our parents which are all part of the equation and it’s a very very important equation for us.”

Joining Middleton-Hope and Lethbridge-East MLA Nathan Neudorf in Lethbridge was Premier Danielle Smith.

Smith called on the NDP to help get the by-election called, specifically saying a NDP caucus member should step down to let Nenshi into office.

A by-election must be called within six months of a candidate stepping down, so the Lethbridge-West election has be called by January 1, 2024.
