Alberta begins consultations for junior high & career ed curriculums

With Alberta’s new K-6 curriculums now mostly in place, the Ministry of Education is turning its focus to more advanced grades.

The province is beginning to engage with education partners and teachers to help inform the development of draft curriculums for Grades 7-9 math, Grades 7-9 social studies, Grades 7-10 physical education and wellness, and career and life management (CALM).

Minister of Education Demetrios Nicolaides says this process will ensure that future junior high classes align with the recently developed elementary curriculum.

“Alberta’s government is committed to providing students with a strong and modern curriculum that sets them up for success in the classroom and beyond,” says Nicolaides.

“The expertise and insights of our education partners are essential as we work together to build a comprehensive curriculum that will inspire a passion for learning and connect students more closely to careers.”

As part of the engagement, participants will also be able to weigh in on content for career education, financial literacy, basic life skills and home maintenance. The ministry says that will help to inform the organization of content and courses.

The government says its goal is to have draft content ready for public review in spring 2025.

In the 2022-23 school year, schools have implemented the new K-6 curriculums in most subjects. A total of 62 school authorities are piloting the draft K-6 social studies curriculum this year.
