City of Lethbridge partners with Trail Alliance to improve and expand network

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Officials say there will be a greater effort to maintain and grow the trail network in Lethbridge.

The Lethbridge Trail Alliance (LTA) and City of Lethbridge have formally entered into an agreement that works to protect the unique coulee landscapes while offering recreational experiences.

The City’s Parks Planning Manager Andrew Sommerville says this was a natural fit for both organizations.

The goal is to have safer, more sustainable and more enjoyable pathways for all users.

“These types of community-driven partnerships have proven very successful in other Municipalities and recreational trail communities. It’s a testament to the hard work, dedication and shared vision the LTA and Parks have fostered in recent years,” says Sommerville.

Sommerville says there are currently no plans to build new trails in the city, but rather to add more to its network and improve existing ones.

“The other thing we’re working on is the addition of way-finding signs for the river valley trail network. We engage with the Lethbridge Trail Alliance to ensure we have those trails named properly with the proper difficulty ratings and designations and stuff like that as well,” says Sommerville.

The collaboration also highlights the LTA’s role as trail advocates and stewards and formalizes them as key stakeholders in trail planning and development.

The group oversees trail maintenance, volunteer coordination and promoting responsible use.

There are more than 114 km of pathways in Lethbridge’s coulees, including 31 km of current sanctioned single-track trails
