City of Lethbridge eliminating recycling collection fees in 2025

The City of Lethbridge promises it is not an April Fool’s joke, but many residents will no longer have to pay for recycling collection.

Council approved a reduction in utility bills at Tuesday’s meeting, set to take effect on April 1, 2025.

Residents who have blue collection bins will pay $9 per month less, while those who use communal bins will see their fees go down by $7 per month.

The Alberta Government has created a program called Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR), which makes producers of printed paper and packaging responsible for the cost of recycling their products.

Mayor Blaine Hyggen says this is good news for people in the city.

“The EPR process has provided some excellent cost-saving opportunities for taxpayers and we look forward to learning more about what opportunities may arise with the program progression of EPR,” says Hyggen.

Those living in apartments and condos will see no changes to their fees as they are still exempt from the city’s recycling collection program until October 2026.
