Lethbridge Fire and Emergency Services providing holiday safety tips

Dec 15, 2024 | 8:00 AM

Lethbridge Fire and Emergency Services is giving tips to residents on how to stay safe this holiday season.

December is one of the busiest months for home fires according to LFES, and that comes from multiple factors.

A major cause of home fires in December are cooking fires. Fire Marshal Troy Hicks says it is very important to remain attentive when you are cooking, and to not leave any stoves unattended.

Hicks adds that while turkeys and other foods take a long time to bake in the oven, you should never leave your residence while it is being cooked.

In addition to cooking, other factors in the home can lead to fires and accidents. Decorations and extension cords may have frayed wires, another potential cause for a fire, and open flames from candles also provides a risk.

Hicks also says it is important to make sure Christmas trees are well maintained.

In the event of a fire, LFES says that de-cluttering the front is very important in case you need to quickly leave. Boots, coats and other items should be moved to a place where they will not block access to the door.

Residents are asked to regularly practice their home fire escape plan with all household members, and check smoke alarms frequently.
