Workers’ Compensation Board releases 2023 annual report

The Government of Alberta is pleased to share that in 2023, the Workers’ Compensation Board (WCB) issued wage-loss benefits to 83 per cent of reported injured workers within 14 days of claim registration, a key achievement for the regulator.

The details come from the WCB’s 2023 annual report, which also said the province exceeded its goal of returning at least 85 per cent of workers to work within four months, including those requiring modified duties.

“Workers getting back to sustainable and meaningful work after an illness or injury is a top priority for Alberta’s government,” commented Minister of Jobs, Economy and Trade Matt Jones. “WCB’s 2023 annual report highlights the significant progress made in improving the workers’ compensation system, ensuring injured workers receive timely care and supporting their safe return to work. The results of this year’s report offer a strong foundation for continued improvements in workers’ compensation.”

For workers unable to return to their previous jobs, the report says WCB and its partners successfully assisted 85 per cent of them with job placements or re-employment leads to provide support during the workers’ transitions.

WCB officials say 86 per cent of workers who used WCB services reported being satisfied with timelines, transparency and respect in their interactions.

“I would like to thank WCB for the hard effort and dedication. From what I have experienced, WCB goes above and beyond,” shared Isabella M., an injured worker and WCB claimant. “I have always had top notch communication, always been treated with respect and always been valued. I was given the proper support I needed. I cannot thank WCB enough for everything they have done for me.”

The government says it is committed to maintaining and improving the workers’ compensation system, and ensuring employers receive affordable, no-fault liability insurance.
