Campaign collecting cell phones for domestic violence victims in Lethbridge

Dec 29, 2024 | 6:00 AM

If you have any old cell phones collecting dust in your home, you can put them to good use.

The Domestic Violence Action Team, part of Lethbridge Family Services (LFS), has launched the Cellphones for Safety Campaign.

Donated phones will be given to victims of domestic violence in local communities.

A media release from LFS says cell phones can improve peoples’ independence, security and opportunities, especially for those in unsafe situations.

“Abusers often try to control their victims by taking or destroying their phones, leaving them isolated and unable to seek help. However, even a phone without an active plan can still dial 911, providing a vital means of contact in an emergency,” reads the media release from LFS. “By donating your old device, you’re giving someone the hope, safety, and independence they need to escape an abusive situation and rebuild their future.”

YWCA CEO Jill Young says her organization is one of several that receives phones through this initiative.

She adds that she has seen first-hand the difference it makes to put a phone in the hands of somebody who needs it.

“A cell phone is a critical tool for someone fleeing dangerous situations, providing an immediate, crucial connection to emergency services, support networks, and other resources. Community support is essential to keep this vital program running, and we’re grateful for everyone who helps make it possible,” says Young.

With plenty of retailers offering Boxing Day deals on new smartphones, LFS says now is a good time to get a new device for yourself and donate your old one.

Those looking to donate are asked to ensure their devices are wiped of all personal data and reset to factory settings. If you are unable to do so, volunteers will reset them for you before being distributed.
