Lethbridge Polytechnic expecting deficit due to international student restrictions

One of Lethbridge’s post-secondary schools says it is facing “significant financial challenges” due to recent changes to federal policy.

The Government of Canada announced in September 2024 that it would be reducing the number of international student visas by around 48,000 for 2025/26.

It was a decision that will impact many colleges and universities across the country.

Lethbridge Polytechnic said in a statement to LNN that there will be fewer international students in the upcoming terms and that they are working to determine the exact numbers.

It is now anticipating a budget deficit of around $10 million for the upcoming fiscal year.

A spokesperson was not able to comment on whether or not there will be any layoffs at the school.

“While we are unable to discuss further details at this time, we can confirm we are assessing all operations to ensure effective spending in line with our new level of revenue to ensure fiscal responsibility and sustained growth in alignment with our vision, mission and values,” says Lethbridge Polytechnic.

Officials say they are working through their budgets to ensure students “continue to benefit from experienced instructors, flexible learning possibilities and programs that are career-ready, hands-on and industry responsive.”

We have reached out to the University of Lethbridge to see what the impact of these changes will be on that institution.
