Lethbridge Polytechnic unveils new name for Wildlife Conservation Lab

Jan 18, 2025 | 7:00 AM

Lethbridge Polytechnic has announced the new name for its wildlife teaching lab.

On Thursday, January 16, 2025, the school announced that the lab will be called the Alberta Professional Outfitters Society Wildlife Conservation Lab, following $350,000 in donations over the last two years from the Alberta Professional Outfitters Society (APOS).

A significant portion of the funding from APOS has been used to expand and upgrade equipment for the polytechnic’s Wildlife Analytics Lab, located on the second floor of the Cousins Science Centre. In that lab, employees and student researchers analyze cementum from wildlife teeth, primarily to estimate age.

Dr. Everett Hanna, an instructor of Environmental Sciences at Lethbridge Polytechnic says the partnership will be a great benefit for the students.

In the lab, the students and professors will be able to use new advanced technology to analyze cementum, a mineralized tissue surrounding the roots of teeth. Cementum can provide useful information on wildlife trends, animal population dynamics and potential pathways for dealing with urgent challenges like Chronic Wasting Disease.
