‘Near miss’ involving young pedestrian in Cardston

Officials in Cardston are urging people to be cautious at intersections after a young girl was nearly hit by a vehicle.

Cardston Municipal Enforcement (CME) says in a Facebook post that the child was walking towards the Cardston Elementary School on Wednesday, January 22, 2025.

They say a vehicle nearly collided with the girl at a four-way stop.

The CME employee says there were two contributing factors.

For drivers, they say vehicles must come to a complete stop at the white line, not at the crosswalk. They must then scan the intersection to ensure it is safe to proceed.

“Failing to come to a complete stop is obviously dangerous and comes with a hefty fine,” reads the CME Facebook post.

Pedestrians are being reminded that they have the right of way at intersections, so there is no need to rush and run into the street.

“You also need to stop and scan the intersection,” says CME. “That means you look both ways, and make eye contact with drivers. If you can’t see their faces they might not see you. When it is safe walk across the road.”

Drivers who fail to stop at a stop sign in Alberta can be fined $405 and receive three demerit points.
