Lethbridge Polytechnic students raise money for Elder Abuse network

A group of local post-secondary students were hard at work to support seniors who are suffering from abuse.

The students are part of the Therapeutic Recreation – Gerontology (TR) program at Lethbridge Polytechnic.

They spent February engaged in fundraising initiatives and efforts to raise awareness for the Lethbridge Elder Abuse Response Network (LEARN).

  • Creating and selling TR Month T-shirts to students and professionals in the field
  • Crocheting and selling dishcloths
  • Selling claw clips with leather tooling, donated by TNK Leatherwork
  • A “till top-up” program at Coaldale Pharmasave that encouraged customers to “top up” their purchases for the cause

Students also held a TR Month event on Valentine’s Day to educate and advocate for recreational therapy.

By the month’s end, the students had raised over $1,100 for LEARN.

LEARN is overseen by the Lethbridge Senior Citizens Organization and is a coordinated community response composed of senior-serving agencies that work to provide education, awareness and advocacy to community members regarding elder abuse.
