The field of candidates in the 2025 federal election in Lethbridge has widened to six.

The Christian Heritage Party has announced Marc Slingerland as its candidate in the southern Alberta city.

Slingerland is no stranger to election campaigns as he represented the party in 2006 and 2019.

He says abortion is his top policy priority.

“I think Lethbridge voters deserve to be able to vote for a candidate and a party that is pro-life without exception, that defends the family as the foundation of society and that stands up for our fundamental freedoms,” says Slingerland.

Another major issue for Slingerland is reversing the implementation of Bill C-4, which outlawed the practice of conversion therapy in Canada. He says Lethbridge’s Conservative incumbent Rachael Thomas has been an overall “fantastic” MP, but this is one issue where they differ.

“When Bill C-4 was passed in Parliament that would criminalize parents, counselors, pastors for trying to help children with gender dysphoria, the Conservative Party was behind that – that was a unanimous vote in Parliament,” says Slingerland. “We need to have a party that is aligned with the candidates’ views in representing the voters in Lethbridge.”

He says he also wants to make a serious effort to reduce the national debt.

A report from the Fraser Institute found that the Canadian government was set to spend $46.5 billion in interest payments on the national debt in 2024, or approximately $127 million every day.

“That is money that could be much better spent on the actual priorities of Canadians. It’s one of the reasons that tariff threats from the U.S. are problematic because our own country is not in good shape,” says Singlerland.

Instead, he would want to focus Ottawa on paying down the debt, reducing the size of the government, reducing foreign aid, strengthening the military, and standing up against overreach by the country’s courts.

Slingerland is the principal at the Calvin Christian School near Monarch.

He says his background in education means he is well-adept at finding solutions that work for everyone and always has the best interests of youth at heart.
