TORONTO — Gordie Herbert will take over as head coach of the senior men’s national team in 2026, Canada Basketball announced Thursday.

The Penticton, B.C., native led Germany to a FIBA World Cup title in 2023 and a fourth-place finish at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

He replaces Jordi Fernández, who guided Canada to a historic bronze medal at the 2023 World Cup and its first Olympic berth in 24 years.

A former national team player, Herbert has served as an assistant with Canada in multiple international windows.

He’s currently coaching FC Bayern Munich and has more than 30 years of experience in Europe and the NBA.

Canada, ranked No. 6 in the world, is aiming for back-to-back Olympic appearances and a podium finish at the 2028 L.A. Games.
